⚖️ How to Solve One-Step Equations

The Golden Rule

Whatever you do to one side of an equation, do the SAME to the other side. Use the opposite (inverse) operation to isolate the variable.

If equation adds → Subtract
If equation subtracts → Add

Worked Example

Look at the equation: x + 8 = 15

The equation is adding 8. Use the opposite — subtract 8 from both sides.

x + 8 − 8 = 15 − 8  →  x = 7

✅ Check: Does 7 + 8 = 15? Yes!
x + 8 = 15
↓
x = 7

Another Example (Subtraction)

Equation: x − 10 = 4

The equation is subtracting 10. Use the opposite — add 10 to both sides.
