📚 Simple & Compound Interest

💰 Simple Interest — I = Prt

Interest is money paid for the use of depositors’ money. Simple interest is earned only on the principal.

P
P = Principal (starting amount) · r = rate as a decimal · t = time in years
$1,500 at 4% for 5 years: I = 1500 × 0.04 × 5 = $300
💵
Total balance = Principal + Interest
$1,500 + $300 = $1,800

📈 Compound Interest — A = P(1 + r)ᵗ

Compound interest is paid on the principal and on interest already earned. A is the amount after t years.

$1,500 at 5% for 5 years: A = 1500(1 + 0.05)⁵ = $1,914.42
Interest earned = 1914.42 − 1500 = $414.42
🧮
Use the calculator (bottom left)! Type the whole expression with parentheses and the ^ key:
1500*(1+0.05)^5
It follows order of operations for you.
