📚 Personal Budget Basics
Key Vocabulary
Income
Money you receive (allowance, wages, gifts)
Expenses
Money you spend on things (food, clothes, fun)
Savings
Money set aside for future use
Balanced Budget
Income ≥ Total Expenses
Reading a Budget
1
Add up all expenses
to find total spending.
$25 + $40 + $30 = $95 total expenses
2
Subtract total expenses from income
to find remaining balance.
$200 income − $95 expenses = $105 remaining
3
Check if balanced:
is income ≥ total expenses? If not, you are over budget.
$200 ≥ $95 ✓ Balanced!
Finding Percent of Income
1
Set up a proportion:
put the expense over income on one side, and x over 100 on the other.
amount / income = x / 100
2
Cross multiply
and solve for x.
$40 / $200 = x / 100 → 200x = 4000 → x = 20%
