The Golden Rule: Line Up the Decimal Points!

When adding or subtracting decimals, always line up the decimal points in the same column before you calculate.

💡 4.75 has hundredths — write 2.3 with the decimal lined up, not padded with zeros.

Tips to Ace It

• Write digits in columns: ones under ones, tenths under tenths
• The decimal point in the answer goes straight down
• For subtraction — borrow across the decimal point just like whole numbers
• You do not need to add placeholder zeros — just line up the decimal
