📚 Dividing Decimals
The Move-the-Decimal Method
1
Make the divisor a whole number
by moving its decimal point to the right.
8.4 ÷ 0.4 → move divisor 1 place right → 0.4 becomes 4
2
Move the dividend's decimal the same number of places.
8.4 also moves 1 place → 84
3
Divide as with whole numbers.
84 ÷ 4 = 21
Divide Decimal Integers (with Signs)
1
Divide the absolute values
as normal decimal division.
6.4 ÷ 4 = 1.6 | 0.36 ÷ 4 = 0.09
2
Apply the sign rule:
same signs → positive; different signs → negative.
−6.4 ÷ 4 =
−1.6
| 6.4 ÷ −4 =
−1.6
| −6.4 ÷ −4 =
1.6
Quick Examples
3.6 ÷ 0.9
→ 36 ÷ 9
= 4
4.5 ÷ 1.5
→ 45 ÷ 15
= 3
7.2 ÷ 4
→ divide normally
= 1.8
