📚 Properties of Dilations

What Is a Dilation?

A dilation resizes a figure from a center point (here, the origin). The image is the same shape but a different size — every distance is multiplied by the scale factor k.

📈
k > 1 means an enlargement — the image is bigger and farther from the origin.
k = 2: (1, 3) → (2, 6)
📉
0 < k < 1 means a reduction — the image is smaller and closer to the origin.
k = 1/2: (4, 6) → (2, 3)

Finding the Scale Factor & Image

Scale factor: divide an image coordinate by the matching preimage coordinate.
k = image ÷ preimage
Image point: multiply BOTH coordinates by k.
Rule: (x, y) → (kx, ky)

How to Play

🔍
What Is the Scale FactorEasy: tell enlargement vs. reduction and find whole-number scale factors. Medium: fraction scale factors. Hard: type the scale factor yourself.
📌
What Is the Image PointEasy: pick the image coordinates. Medium: tap the image point on the graph. Hard: type the coordinates.
