📚 Solving Two-Step Equations

The Golden Rule

Whatever you do to one side, do to the other side. Always undo operations in reverse order — addition/subtraction first, then multiplication/division.

1
Undo the addition or subtraction — add or subtract the constant from both sides.
2x + 3 = 11 → subtract 3 → 2x = 8
2
Undo the multiplication or division — divide or multiply both sides.
2x = 8 → divide by 2 → x = 4

Worked Examples

Example 1:   3x − 5 = 16

3x − 5 = 16
+5 both sides
3x = 21
÷ 3 both sides
x = 7

Example 2:   x/4 + 2 = 6

x/4 + 2 = 6
−2 both sides
x/4 = 4
×4 both sides
x = 16

⚠ With Negatives

Example 3:   −3x + 6 = 15

−3x + 6 = 15
−6 both sides
−3x = 9
÷ −3 both sides
x = −3
