📚 Two-Step Equations

The Two-Step Method

Work backwards through the order of operations. Undo addition or subtraction first, then undo multiplication or division.

Add or subtract on both sides to move the constant away from the x term.
3x + 5 = 17 → subtract 5 from both sides → 3x = 12

Divide or multiply both sides to isolate x.
3x = 12 → divide both sides by 3 → x = 4

x/a + b = c form

Subtract b from both sides to isolate x/a.
x/4 + 3 = 7 → subtract 3 → x/4 = 4

Multiply both sides by a to solve for x.
x/4 = 4 → multiply both sides by 4 → x = 16
