📚 Properties of Reflections

What Is a Reflection?

A reflection flips a figure over a line, called the line of reflection, like a mirror. Every point moves to the opposite side, the same distance from the line. The image is congruent to the preimage — same size, but reversed.

Reflecting across the x-axis flips a point up/down. Its distance above or below the x-axis stays the same.
(2, 3) → (2, −3)
Reflecting across the y-axis flips a point left/right. Its distance left or right of the y-axis stays the same.
(2, 3) → (−2, 3)

The Diagonal Mirrors

You can also reflect across slanted lines.

Across the line y = x: the point (3, 1) lands at (1, 3).
Across the line y = −x: the point (3, 1) lands at (−1, −3).

How to Play

🔍
What Was the Reflection — Every question shows a point and its image on a graph. Easy: x-axis & y-axis, with an arrow — pick the words. Medium: all four mirror lines — pick the words. Hard: pick the coordinate rule, like (x, −y).
📌
What Is the ImageEasy: tap the image point on the graph (x-axis & y-axis). Medium & Hard: a mix of graph tapping and coordinate choices, all four mirror lines.
