Same Denominator — Easy!

Keep the denominator the same.
1/5 + 2/5 → denominator stays 5

Add or subtract the numerators only.
1/5 + 2/5 = 3/5

Simplify if possible.
4/8 = 1/2

Different Denominators — Find the LCD!

Find the Least Common Denominator (LCD) — the smallest number both denominators divide into.
1/4 + 1/6 → LCD of 4 and 6 = 12

Convert each fraction to an equivalent fraction with the LCD.
1/4 = 3/12    1/6 = 2/12

Add or subtract the numerators.
3/12 + 2/12 = 5/12

Simplify the result to lowest terms.
6/12 = 1/2

❗ Negative Fractions

A negative sign applies to the whole fraction. Treat negative fractions just like negative integers — use the same rules you know for adding and subtracting negatives!

−1/3 + 2/3 = 1/3
1/4 − 3/4 = −2/4 = −1/2
