📚 Multiplying Fractions

Multiplying Two Fractions

Multiply straight across — tops with tops, bottoms with bottoms. Then simplify!

1
Multiply the numerators: the top numbers
2/5 × 3/4 → 2 × 3 = 6
2
Multiply the denominators: the bottom numbers
5 × 4 = 20 → answer so far: 6/20
3
Simplify to lowest terms: divide top and bottom by their GCF
6/20 ÷ 2/2 = 3/10 ✓

Multiplying Mixed Numbers

Convert to improper fractions first — never multiply the wholes and fractions separately!

1
Convert each mixed number: whole × bottom + top
1 2/3 → 5/3    2 1/3 → 7/3
2
Multiply straight across:
5/3 × 7/3 = 35/9
3
Convert back to a mixed number: divide top by bottom
35 ÷ 9 = 3 R 8 → 3 8/9 ✓
