The Formula: I = P × r × t

Principal — the starting amount of money (loan or deposit)
Example: $500 deposited in a bank

Rate — the annual interest rate as a decimal (divide % by 100)
5% → 0.05  •  4.5% → 0.045

Time — the number of years
3 years → t = 3

Interest — the money earned or owed. I = P × r × t
I = $500 × 0.05 × 3 = $75

Finding the Total Amount

Total = P + I — add the interest to the principal
Total = $500 + $75 = $575
