📚 The Pythagorean Theorem

The Big Idea

a² + b² = c²

In a right triangle, the two legs (a and b) make the right angle. The hypotenuse (c) is the longest side — always across from the right angle.

1
Finding the hypotenuse? Square the legs, add, then take the square root.
legs 3 & 4 → 3² + 4² = 9 + 16 = 25 → c = √25 = 5
2
Finding a leg? Square the hypotenuse, subtract the known leg squared, then square root.
c = 13, leg = 5 → 13² − 5² = 169 − 25 = 144 → √144 = 12
3
Not a perfect square? Use the √ key on the calculator and round to the nearest tenth.

Real World Right Triangles

Right triangles hide everywhere! Find them, then decide: is the missing side a leg or the hypotenuse?

Ladders & ramps — the ladder or ramp surface is the hypotenuse.
TV screens & fields — the diagonal is the hypotenuse; width and height are legs.
Diagonal inside a box (Hard!) — two steps: floor diagonal first, then use it with the height.
d = √(l² + w² + h²)
