📚 Solving One-Step Inequalities

Add & Subtract Inequalities

Use the inverse operation on both sides — just like equations. The inequality sign does NOT change.
x + 7 > 12 → subtract 7 → x > 5

The symbol stays the same whether you add or subtract.
x − 4 ≤ 10 → add 4 → x ≤ 14

Multiply & Divide Inequalities

Divide or multiply both sides to isolate x.
3x < 15 → divide by 3 → x < 5 (sign stays)
⚠ THE FLIP RULE — Most Important!
If you multiply or divide by a NEGATIVE number, you MUST flip the inequality sign.
−4x ≤ 20
→ ÷(−4)
÷ negative → FLIP!
