📈 Non-Proportional Linear Relationships

The Equation: y = mx + b

m
m is the rate of change (slope) — how much y changes for every 1 increase in x.
m = (y₂ − y₁) ÷ (x₂ − x₁) = change in y ÷ change in x
b
b is the y-intercept (starting value) — the value of y when x = 0. Non-proportional means b ≠ 0!

Non-proportional means the line does not pass through the origin. There is a starting value (b ≠ 0).

How to Find m and b from a Table

Find m: Pick any two rows. Divide change in y by change in x.
(2,14) and (3,18): m = (18−14)÷(3−2) = 4

Find b: Use y = mx + b with any point. Plug in and solve.
m=4, point (2,14): 14 = 4(2) + b → b = 6. Equation: y = 4x + 6

If x = 0 is in the table, that y-value is b directly!
