📚 Mean Absolute Deviation

What Is MAD?

MAD = the average distance each data value is from the mean.

A small MAD means the data is close together (consistent). A big MAD means the data is spread out.

1
Find the mean of the data set.
14, 12, 13, 15, 12, 14, 17, 15 → 112 ÷ 8 = 14
2
Find the distance between each value and the mean (always positive!).
0, 2, 1, 1, 2, 0, 3, 1
3
Average the distances — that's the MAD!
10 ÷ 8 = 1.25

Which One Is More Consistent?

Compare the MADs — the LOWER MAD wins for consistency!

Beginning-of-year scores: MAD = 3.25
End-of-year scores: MAD = 3.5
🏆
3.25 < 3.5 → the beginning-of-year scores are more consistent!

How to Play

🧮
Find the MAD — Work through the 3 steps and pick the MAD from 4 answers.
⚖️
Most Consistent? — Compare two data sets. Lower MAD = more consistent!
🎲
Mixed — Both types together for the ultimate dash!
