⚫ Introduction to Circles
Parts of a Circle
●
Center
— the fixed middle point of the circle
Every point on the circle is the same distance from the center.
r
Radius
— the distance from the center to any point on the circle
Diameter = 2 × radius
d
Diameter
— a chord that passes through the center; the longest distance across
Radius = diameter ÷ 2
C
Circumference
— the distance all the way around the circle
Like perimeter, but for circles!
Circumference Formulas
πd
C = π × d
— use when given the diameter
d = 10 → C = π × 10 = 10π
2πr
C = 2 × π × r
— use when given the radius
r = 4 → C = 2 × π × 4 = 8π
π
Leave your answer in terms of π
— write the number times π (no calculator needed!)
Answer as “10π” not “31.4”
