Additive Relationships

y = x + a  —  the same number is added to every x

Grant is 5 years older than Tim. Grant = Tim + 5
Tim: 1, 2, 3, 4  →  Grant: 6, 7, 8, 9

Check the table: every y is exactly 5 more than its x. Same + number every time = additive.

On a graph: the points make a line that does NOT pass through (0, 0) — it starts higher up.

Multiplicative Relationships

y = ax  —  every x is multiplied by the same number
