Reading an Ordered Pair (x, y)

The x comes first: move right (+) or left (−). The y comes second: move up (+) or down (−). Always start at the origin (0, 0).

For (2, 4): start at 0, go right 2, then up 4.
(2, 4) → Quadrant I

For (−3, 2): go left 3, then up 2.
(−3, 2) → Quadrant II

For (−4, −4): left 4, down 4. For (4, −3): right 4, down 3.
(−4, −4) → QIII    (4, −3) → QIV

The Four Quadrants

Quadrants are numbered counterclockwise with Roman numerals, starting at the top right. The signs tell you where you are!

I
(+, +) — top right — both positive
II
(−, +) — top left — x negative, y positive
III
(−, −) — bottom left — both negative
IV
(+, −) — bottom right — x positive, y negative
Points ON an axis (like (0, 5) or (−4, 0)) are not in any quadrant!

How to Play
