📚 Dividing Decimals

Dividing a Decimal by a Whole Number

Bring the decimal point straight up into your answer, then divide like normal.

1
Set up long division: 29.5 ÷ 4 → 4 goes outside, 29.5 inside.
2
Bring the decimal straight up into the answer spot before you divide.
3
Divide and add zeros to keep going until it comes out even.
29.5 ÷ 4 = 7.375

Dividing a Decimal by a Decimal

You can’t divide by a decimal — so shift BOTH points the same number of places until the divisor is a whole number!

0.144 ÷ 0.96 → shift both 2 places → 14.4 ÷ 96
0.144 ÷ 0.96 = 0.15
4.8 ÷ 0.6 → shift both 1 place → 48 ÷ 6 = 8
Whatever you do to one number, do to the other — that keeps the answer the same!
