📚 Multiplying Decimals

The Big Idea

Multiply like whole numbers → then place the decimal point

Count the total decimal places in both factors. The product gets that many.

Ignore the points: for 2.03 × 5, multiply 203 × 5 = 1,015

Count decimal places: 2.03 has 2, and 5 has 0 → total of 2

Shift the point: 1,015 → move 2 places left
2.03 × 5 = 10.15

Decimal × Decimal

Same steps — just add up the decimal places from both numbers!

5.2 × 1.43 → multiply 52 × 143 = 7,436 → 1 + 2 = 3 places → 7.436

0.2 × 0.3 → 2 × 3 = 6 → 1 + 1 = 2 places → 0.06
