📚 Understanding Exponents

What Is an Exponent?

baseexponent = repeated multiplication

The base is the number multiplied. The exponent says how many times.

1
In 2⁴: base = 2, exponent = 4
2⁴ means 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 16
2
Multiply step by step: 2×2=4 → 4×2=8 → 8×2=16
3
Zero Power Rule: Any number to the 0th power = 1
5° = 1    12° = 1    100° = 1

Writing Expanded Form as an Exponent

Count how many times the number appears — that count is the exponent!

2 × 2 × 2 → base 2, multiplied 3 times → 2³ = 8
7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 → base 7, 5 times → 7⁵
16 × 16 → base 16, 2 times → 16² = 256
