📚 Prime Factorization

What Is a Prime Number?

A prime number has exactly two factors: 1 and itself.

A composite number has more than two factors. The number 1 is neither prime nor composite!

Prime: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23 ...
2 is the ONLY even prime number
🔢
Composite: 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 15 ... they can be broken into smaller factors.
⚠️
Watch out! Some numbers LOOK prime but aren't: 51 = 3 × 17, and 91 = 7 × 13.

Building a Factor Tree

Split the number into two factors. Keep splitting until every branch ends in a prime — then circle them!

1
Split 56: 56 → 2 × 28 → 2 × 2 × 14 → 2 × 2 × 2 × 7
56 = 2 · 2 · 2 · 7
2
Group repeats with exponents: three 2s become 2³
56 = 2³ × 7
3
From the video: 80 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 5 = 2⁴ × 5  and  36 = 2 × 2 × 3 × 3 = 2² × 3²
