📚 Volume of Triangular Prisms

The Formula

½Bh = V

where B = b × htri (triangle base × triangle height) and h = prism height

Find B — multiply the triangle's base (b) by the triangle's height (htri).
b = 8, h = 5 → B = 8 × 5 = 40

Multiply ½ × B × h — the ½ accounts for the triangle area, and h is the prism height.
½ × 40 × 9 = 180 units³

Example 1 — Find Volume

5 ft 8 ft 9 ft

b = 8 ft,  h = 5 ft,  H = 9 ft

B = 8 × 5 = 40
V = ½ × 40 × 9
V = ½ × 360
V = 180 ft³

Example 2 — Find Prism Height (H)

5 ft 8 ft ? ft

V = 180 ft³,  b = 8 ft,  h = 5 ft

B = 8 × 5 = 40
½ × 40 × H = 180
20 × H = 180
H = 180 ÷ 20
H = 9 ft

⚠ Remember

!
b and h are the triangle's dimensions — b is the base of the triangle, h is the perpendicular height of the triangle (they form a right angle).

H is the prism height — the distance between the two triangular bases (the length of the prism). Don't mix it up with the triangle's h!

Don't forget the ½! — Triangles are half of a rectangle, so always divide by 2.
