📚 How It Works

Writing Ratios 3 Ways

A ratio compares two amounts. If a class has 15 boys and 12 girls, the ratio of boys to girls can be written:

With a colon:
15 : 12

With the word "to":
15 to 12
3
As a fraction:
15/12

Simplest Form & Order

Simplify by dividing both parts by the same number: 15 : 12 → divide both by 3 → 5 : 4

Order matters! Boys to girls is 5 : 4, but girls to boys is 4 : 5.

"To total" means add both parts first: boys to total = 15 : 27 → 5 : 9

Unit Rates — Finding the Amount for 1

A unit rate tells you how much for just one unit. Divide!

A 24 oz box of cereal costs $2.88 → $2.88 ÷ 24 = $0.12 per ounce

Jon drove 142 miles in 2 hours → 142 ÷ 2 = 71 miles per hour
