⚡ Multiplying & Dividing Rational Numbers

Sign Rules — Always Check the Signs First!

SignsResultExamples
+ × + or + ÷ + Positive ➕ 3 × 4 = 12
8 ÷ 2 = 4
+ × − or − × + Negative ➖ 3 × −4 = −12
−6 ÷ 2 = −3
− × − or − ÷ − Positive ➕ −3 × −4 = 12
−8 ÷ −2 = 4

Multiplying Fractions

1
Determine the sign first, then multiply numerators together and denominators together.
−2/3 × 3/4 → negative → (2×3)/(3×4) = 6/12 = −1/2
2
Simplify by dividing numerator and denominator by their GCF.
6/12 → GCF is 6 → 1/2

Dividing Fractions — Keep, Change, Flip (KCF)

K
Keep the first fraction exactly as it is.
2/3 ÷ 4/5 → keep 2/3
C
Change the division sign to multiplication.
2/3 × 4/5
F
Flip (reciprocal) the second fraction, then multiply.
2/3 × 5/4 = 10/12 = 5/6
✎ Answer Format: Enter whole numbers as integers (e.g., −6), fractions as a/b (e.g., −3/4 or 5/2). Always simplify — enter 1/2, not 2/4.
