📚 Writing Two-Step Equations

Anatomy of a Two-Step Equation

Variable term
ax
Operation
+ or −
Constant
b
= Total
c

Forms:  ax + b = c    ax − b = c    x/a + b = c    (x + b)/a = c

4-Step Strategy

1
Identify the variable — What quantity is unknown? This becomes x.
Unknown: number of hours worked → Let x = hours
2
Find the rate or multiplier — What is being repeated or multiplied by the unknown?
"$8 per hour" → 8x
3
Spot the constant — Is there a fixed amount added or subtracted separately?
"$5 tip" added on top → + 5
4
Set equal to the total — Write "= total amount" on the right side.
Total earned is $29 → = 29
$8 per hour + $5 tip = $29 total
8x + 5 = 29
