📚 Variables on Both Sides

Solving the Inequality

Get all the x terms on one side and the numbers on the other — just like an equation.

1
Example: 5x + 3 > 2x + 12
Subtract 2x from both sides → 3x + 3 > 12
2
Undo the constant: subtract 3 → 3x > 9
3
Divide: both sides by 3 → x > 3

The Flip Rule

If you multiply or divide both sides by a negative number, the inequality symbol flips!

🔄
2x + 5 > 5x − 4 → −3x > −9 → divide by −3 and FLIP → x < 3
💡
Pro tip: move the x terms so the coefficient stays positive — then no flip is needed!
