📚 Independent & Dependent Variables

Which Variable Is Which?

The independent variable (x) is the cause — the one you control. The dependent variable (y) is the effect — it depends on x.

1
Joe drives 45 mph. The hours he drives (x) determine the miles he travels (y).
d = 45h  →  hours = independent, distance = dependent
2
Sue rents a kayak for $20/hour. Hours rented (x) determine the total cost (y).
c = 20h  →  hours = independent, cost = dependent
3
On a graph: independent goes on the x-axis, dependent goes on the y-axis.

Completing a Table

Use the rate to find each y-value: multiply x by the rate (and add any starting amount).

Joe at 45 mph: 3 hours → 45 × 3 = 135 miles
Sue’s kayak at $20/hr: 4 hours → 20 × 4 = $80
Bonus: values that can be ANY amount (like time) are continuous; values counted in whole steps (like tickets) are discrete.
